As I sit at my desk ready to plunge into some wedding album designs. My mind has been wandering towards a coffee break. As in the kind I had in Costa Rica after a tour of the Finca Rosa Blanca Coffee Plantation and Inn. It was a really fascinating look into the world of organic, shade grown, micro coffee production. Most of the coffee had already been picked but there was a few beans left on the plants as we walked through. Organic farming is really quite an undertaking.
Below is a short clip about the Coffee Plantation that aired on the Live Well HD Network.

A few rainy-ish hours is not nearly enough time to capture an area, but here is my attempt. We had an amazing guide named, Jose, who delivered the entire tour in Spanish and some bird calls thrown in for good measure. He was actually able to call over some birds that he heard off in the distance, who who flew over to check out our little group. The bird below is a Violaceous-Trogon. Yes, I had to look that up when I returned. My Spanish is a bit lacking.

After a bit of a walk up through the forest, we took a aerial tram through the trees to gain a different vantage point. From up above we were able to see a rather small and unassuming looking snake that we were told was an eyelash pit viper. They are typically yellow and very poisonous, but this one was a juvenile, brownish-gray and impossible to get a photo of while we were on a moving tram shooting into the dark under-canopy below. So you will just have to take my word for it that we barely escaped with our lives…

Sort of like packing for a trip with my real children, starting in the snow and moving to a warm climate. And making sure all of the items I bring with me will fit in a carry-on. Parents of young children out there will understand this dilemma.
So this is the type of trip when having a really fast lens makes all the difference. Also one with a bit of a zoom. I brought 2 with me on our trip. My Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L, and I opted to take my smaller, but longer, Canon EF Zoom lens 70 mm-300 mm, F/4.0-5.6, which I find disappointing because of the flatness of the images it produces and lack of control I have over light with such a slow lens. But it beats carrying around my far nicer, but much heavier Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8. I think in retrospect I should have sucked it up, but, what can you do? My poor friend, T, already had to stand there in the middle of the rain while I switched from my short to long lens so that I could go from capturing an orchid to the sloth that was hanging around up above.

That would be me. It is taking me forever to get through my photos from Costa Rica.
Below is my rather disappointing photo of the 3 toed mama sloth with baby in Parque Nacional Braulio Carrillo. Disappointing because of the fact that I was shooting with a rather dark lens. And well, the rain forest is rather dark to begin with so my detail is quite lacking.

3 toed sloth with baby

This was the only shot I managed where one could still make out the baby clinging to her mamas belly. But I kind of like it none the less. And it worked much better in black and white. There are more to come. I swear. If I could only get these 5 fingers working faster and my 2 babies dis-attached from my body. Although cuddly kids are never anything to complain about.

Griffin will find the way. Previous to his above mission to illuminate the livingroom, I found him with his red toy tub upside down on the dining room chair…so as to better be able to reach the lollipop I put up on top of the fridge for later.
For a few weeks I had been cursing the beautiful step stool we had been given by our friends. It managed to give our children access to a world previously 1 inch less unattainable to them. This toy tub adds 6 inches. All previously safe objects on counter tops and dressers are quivering with fear.
At least my children are independent, problem solvers. Sigh.
Below was him last summer figuring out how to get in and out of our neighbors cat door. I would expect NASA to start recruiting soon. If they need someone to build a tower of household items to reach Mars for exploration, they may have their man. Can’t get much worse than many of their previous missions.

Adjusting to the real world again after my trip to Costa Rica is going to be tough. I had the most lovely 4 days away with the best of accommodations, short excursions, food, coffee and most importantly, the company. I had the chance to travel with my old friend (yes, T, I just called you old) and my newest baby, my 7d. It was almost as difficult packing for my camera as it is packing for a trip with my kids. Both our saintly husbands stayed home with our (non-camera) children.

The little bit of the country we managed to see was spectacular. The people were incredibly welcoming and patient with our Spanish. And it was all just so GREEN. I will likely have tons more photos to share later, but I wanted to post a couple before the day creeps away from me.

Already, I can’t wait to go back.

I get asked this question a lot. What are the best little cameras? I have to admit that I have hardly a clue. When it comes to camera purchases for myself, I lean towards the purchace of big, black cameras that have the word Canon on the front. They are the ones that feel like family in my hands. HOWEVER. I have learned over the years that great photos have far less to do with the camera model than with the model of person behind it. The most important upgrade you can make on photography will almost always be upgrading your own knowledge base. A 80$ evening class will almost definately do you far better than a 80$ peice of equipment.
That being said, I found this NYT 300$ camera round up video of new consumer cameras by the New York Times last week. I hope it might help if you are in the market for a new camera.
Here is a Comparison Chart

One thing I would like to mention is that hardly anyone actually uses those gimiky features. Lean towards a good zoom and faster response time. The faster your camera responds to you when you hit the shutter button, the happier people will look on the other side of the lens and the less frustrated you will be with the photos.
Other than that just keep taking photos and try to slow down so you learn from the process!

I am going to take a little break from my usual photo posts and tell you a little story about a certain Mother I know. Perhaps this is the wrong forum, but I know She reads this and it is something I think I can put out there.

Parenting is hard (wicked hard, if you live up here in the Northeast). I have so many friends that seem to navigate its perils much more adeptly and gracefully than I. And they climbed aboard far rockier boats than I did. My first time around with parenting I was granted this perfect little sleep machine who cried rarely, snuggled always and would coo while I worked at editing photos on my computer and answering client emails. I could hardly ask for more, business was good- but not overwhelming and my husband is a partner in all of the parenting tasks, even if his work schedule is/was demanding. Before I digress about how fate really decided we needed a shake up with the second child…I will get back to my friend…

She had her child not long after I had Dunedin. And what a different voyage she had bought tickets for. Where Dunedin wanted the scenic ferry, Her child was ready for rough and wild waters that rocked/bounced their new little family all over the rocky shores. But they got on day after day, and night after night and rode it out. She gave up a lot to have her child. All of us who parent do: Our freedom, our nights, our independent thoughts, some of our friends/relationships, our extraneous hobbies… But She gave up a year of Medical school to be home with Hers on that darn rocky boat. The medical training path is no joke. It doesn’t just take years, it takes one’s days, their nights and important family times and holidays you just can’t get back.

We can skip forward a bit in this story. Now we have moved about an hour away, my Friend is in Residency and we see Her and the clan far less often than we would like. Calendars just get so crammed up and our free time is under a pile of 2t clothes from last summer that are crammed into the closet. But we had a chance to hang out and wipe each others kid’s noses a couple weeks ago. She brought up something that I think so many of us parents feel but, because we are so busy or tired, we lack the perspective to realize the lunacy of. She expressed that She felt inadequate, because with all this training she had received she was unable to do anything to help the victims in Haiti other than just send some money. She had a friend who traveled the world as a single mother and assisted in disaster torn areas. She told me she was envious of some of the things I do with my kids that she sees when I post on the blog. She felt she just couldn’t give enough, that she was tired of needing to be so self focused, which is what is required to advance with one’s medical training. She wants to be able to do something, help people and make a difference. It is because of this deep caring for others that She is so incredibly lovable to me and so many others. (And because she gets my often bizarre sense of humor… but more because of the former part )

So this little story about my DoctorMama friend is really about this feeling of inadequacy that so many of us can feel. Here is this person who, with her husband, has created a warm, nurturing and loving home. They have more empathy and compassion than most of us would know what to do with. They both have advanced medical degrees and help families every day. They provide a stable home with fantastic role modeling of caring, hard work and dedication to their child and others. What can we do as parents when someone like this feels inadequate? I feel bad when I can’t get back to an email right away, or keep our house organized or keep hats on my kid when it is cold outside.

I have another friend who was working 2 jobs and going to school while raising her kids and would manage to take her kids to every event/program the city could offer and have home cooked meals and deserts for them. And another who struggles with being home all day with her young son and is stuck with the questions about whether each choice she makes is the right one. Not to mention my single parent friends who have to do it all on their own. Or ones that have to deal with some really difficult issues with sick spouses or children.
We all look at other households and seem to think that they have figured it all out and have their courses all charted out. Or have enough self-delusion to think that we know exactly what kind of journey we will have and can judge rockier ships from afar. But all of us sometimes just need a little encouragement.

So if you know someone like my Friend… please give them a hug and remind them that you have an extra little lifeboat if they might need to climb in from time to time.

A couple of side notes:

If you haven’t donated already Partners in Health is a fantastic organization that does amazing work world wide and has been in Haiti doing great works for the last 20 years.

I have another friend who also kicks butt and manages parenting, getting her Doctorate, keeping up with her hobbies and writes all about it in a couple (yes, thats right, 2) blogs. They are great reads and always insightful… or at least sarcastic enough to make parenting, well, “funner”. Check them out if you have time: Adjustment and Disorder and Stinkerbells.

I’ve been away from my blog for a bit. Now I have lots of stuff and not so much time. But here are a couple of photos of Dunedin, Griffin and friend G taking some risks and loving it. Note Dunedin’s not so sure expression at the beginning of this ride. But by the bottom, pure joy.
Her love of the snow and sledding has been one of our unexpected pleasures of the season. Last year was such a miserable mix of clinging, slipping, whining, unsure footing… And that was just me. Dunedin had a more difficult time. With both her and Griffin (who was just crawling), outdoor adventures were things to be avoided at all costs. But this year all is different. The right warm gear and enough self-assuredness has made all the difference. She has even been on skis a few times!
